“Something happened here…..”
In 1889, against all odds, a Livermore Valley wine won the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition, surpassing more than 25,000 wines from around the world, including the great First Growths of Bordeaux.
It was a remarkable achievement. More importantly, it raised a question that still resonates today:
What made the wines of Livermore Valley so extraordinary?
That question became an obsession.
For more than a century, Livermore Valley has been one of California's most historically significant winegrowing regions. Long before Napa Valley became synonymous with fine wine, Livermore wines were earning international acclaim for their elegance, structure, and ability to express place.
Yet history has a way of fading. Stories become simplified. Details become obscured. Over time, much of Livermore Valley's remarkable legacy was forgotten.
My journey began with a desire to rediscover that story.

Following the Clues
It is impossible to understand a wine without first understanding the people, places, and events that shaped it.
For years, I immersed myself in Livermore Valley's history, studying vineyard records, agricultural reports, historical accounts, and the wines that once defined the region. What began as research gradually became something more—a search for the clues that connected the valley's past to its future.
Again and again, the reality proved more interesting than the popular narratives. Historical facts that seemed settled often revealed new complexities and unexpected connections. The deeper I looked, the more fascinating the story became.
Livermore Valley's history is filled with remarkable characters, pioneering ideas, and accomplishments that have largely been forgotten. Like winemaking itself, historical research rewards patience. Answers arrive slowly, one clue at a time, each discovery offering another glimpse into the character of a region whose influence on California wine has often been underestimated.
A Lesson in Provenance
The greatest lesson Livermore Valley taught me was not simply which varietals were planted or how wines were made.
It taught me the importance of provenance.
Great wines do not emerge from formulas, trends, or rules. They emerge from places with distinct histories, unique landscapes, and people who care deeply about preserving their character.
Livermore Valley remains my muse. Its vineyards, history, and pioneering spirit continue to inspire much of what we do. My commitment to the valley's historic heritage varietals remains unwavering, particularly those varieties that have demonstrated more than a century of excellence here.
But the lessons I learned in Livermore extend beyond the valley itself.
Whether working with vineyards in Livermore Valley or exceptional sites elsewhere in California, I seek the same qualities that first drew me to this region: authenticity, character, and a genuine sense of place.
